What Petroleum Jelly Actually Is

Petroleum jelly is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons, primarily straight-chain and branched alkanes, cycloalkanes, and a small proportion of aromatic compounds. It is derived from the distillation of crude oil, specifically from the heavier fractions that remain after lighter products like gasoline, kerosene, and diesel have been separated. Those heavy fractions are then subjected to a dewaxing process under controlled cooling, followed by filtration and, depending on the intended grade, further purification steps such as acid treatment or hydrogenation.

The result is a translucent, greasy gel that is stable at room temperature, does not evaporate, and does not react with most common materials. Its melting point typically falls between 38 and 60 degrees Celsius, meaning it is a solid at room temperature but becomes a viscous liquid when heated. This combination of properties is what makes it so versatile: it stays in place on a surface, it does not dry out, it does not conduct electricity, and it provides an effective barrier against moisture and air.

What matters for practical use is not the exact chemistry but the behavior. A good petroleum jelly will spread smoothly, adhere to a surface without running off, remain pliable across a wide temperature range, and stay inert when in contact with metals, plastics, rubber, or skin.
