What a Printhead Actually Does
A printhead is the precision component in an inkjet printer that transforms digital data into physical droplets of ink, placed on a substrate in a controlled pattern. While the printer's software and carriage assembly handle positioning, the printhead is the part that directly touches the material through the medium of the ink drop. It is a miniature fluid-handling system, an electronic switch, and a mechanical shutter all operating in a space smaller than a credit card, often cycling thousands of times per second.
You should not mistake a printhead for a simple nozzle. A single head contains a complex internal structure: ink channels, a firing chamber, a pressure source, and a nozzle plate with hundreds or thousands of individual orifices. The quality of the printed output - the sharpness of edges, the uniformity of color, the absence of banding - is largely determined by this component. It is also the most expensive and most failure-prone part of any inkjet printer. A replacement industrial printhead can cost from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, and in some production machines, the head is worth more than the rest of the printer combined.
