Chapter 1: Understanding Privacy Filters

A privacy filter, in its most common physical form, is a thin polymer sheet or rigid acrylic panel that you place over a display to restrict the angle at which the screen content is visible. When installed correctly, a person sitting directly in front of the screen sees the image at full brightness and clarity. A person sitting at an angle of thirty degrees or more to the side sees a darkened, sometimes almost black, screen. This is not a software effect or a digital obfuscation technique. It is a purely physical property of the material itself.

The technology that makes this possible is called a micro-louver film. Imagine a set of microscopic Venetian blinds embedded inside a transparent plastic layer. Each "blind" is a tiny vertical louver, typically on the order of tens of micrometers wide, spaced a few micrometers apart. Light traveling perpendicular to the screen passes between the louvers and reaches your eye with minimal attenuation. Light traveling at a glancing angle from the side is blocked by the louver walls themselves, much the same way a low sun is blocked by a fence you are looking along. The result is a directional viewing cone, typically around sixty degrees centered on the screen normal, that defines where the image is legible.
