The push up bar is a raised, typically U-shaped or angled frame with handles that you grip while performing a push up. The pull up bar is a horizontal bar, either mounted to a wall, a ceiling, or a door frame, designed for you to grip and pull your body weight upward. They are not complex machines, but the seemingly minor changes they make to your hand and body position can have a significant impact on comfort, range of motion, muscle activation, and the overall effectiveness of the exercise.

Consider the push up first. When you perform a push up with your palms flat on the floor, your wrists are forced into a position of extreme extension, often exceeding 90 degrees. For a person with average mobility, this position can quickly become uncomfortable or even painful, limiting the number of reps they can perform before their wrists give out, not their chest or triceps.
