Pull a receipt from a point-of-sale terminal. Look at it. If it's the glossy, slightly translucent paper that feels slick between your fingers, you're holding a piece of thermal paper. If it's a dull, matte, paper-like sheet that you can write on with a pen, you're holding bond paper. These two types of material make up the overwhelming majority of what are collectively called receipt and adding machine paper rolls. They are not interchangeable, they have different chemistries, and they serve different purposes. Understanding what they are and how they function is the foundation for buying the right roll, eliminating printer jams, and getting a clean, legible output every time.
The Paper In Your Hand
Thermal paper, despite its high-tech feel, has been around in its modern form for decades. It works through a chemical reaction triggered by heat. The paper itself is a base sheet, often made from a blend of virgin and recycled fibers, which is then coated with a specific chemical formula. This top coating contains a colorless dye (typically a leuco dye) and a co-reactant (often an acid, like bisphenol A or a newer alternative). When the print head of a thermal printer heats up a precise spot on the paper, the dye and the acid melt and react, forming a new, colored compound.
