Chapter 1: Understanding Scanner Circuit Boards
Open any flatbed or production document scanner and you will find the one component that defines the machine's behavior: the main circuit board. This isn't the power supply or the glass, though those matter. The scanner circuit board is the brain and the nervous system. It controls the lamp or the LED array, moves the carriage with exacting stepper motor steps, reads the analog voltage from the light-sensitive sensors, converts that analog signal into digital data, and ships that data out to a host computer over USB, SCSI, Ethernet, or a proprietary interface. A scanner is not a camera and it is not a printer. It is a coordinated electromechanical device, and nearly all of the coordination happens on one or two boards.
To work effectively with these boards, you have to stop thinking of them as a single piece of hardware with a magic IC in the middle. A scanner control board is a small system on a board, made up of distinct sub-circuits that work together. Understanding the job of each sub-circuit will allow you to diagnose a failure to the board level, and often to the component level, without a service manual full of flowcharts.
