A shopping cart cover and a high chair cover are, at their core, engineered barriers. They exist to separate a child from a public surface that is, by nature, a high-traffic vector for physical contaminants and biological hazards. A shopping cart handle is touched by hundreds of strangers daily; the tray of a restaurant high chair is a repository for previous meals, not all of which were entirely consumed. The cover's primary function is not comfort, though that is a significant benefit. Its primary function is contamination control, creating a clean, predictable, and consistent surface for the child to occupy.
To understand these products functionally, one must discard the notion of a single, simple textile. A shopping cart cover is a system. It consists of a seating surface, typically made from a waterproof or water-resistant outer layer that protects against spills and accidents, and an inner layer designed for moderate cushioning. This cushioning addresses a real, physical problem: a shopping cart's bare metal or molded plastic seat is cold in winter, hot in summer, and offers no padding for a child being wheeled for an hour or more. The cover system must also incorporate the securing mechanism, which is often the defining difference between a good cover and a dangerous one. This mechanism generally consists of elasticized edges, straps with buckles or clips, and loops that fit over the existing safety harness of the cart or chair.
