The Sink Caddie as an Engineered Object
A sink caddie is not a decorative convenience. It is a structural device designed to hold wet or drying dishes, sponges, brushes, and cleaning agents in a controlled position above or within a sink basin. Its primary function is threefold: to allow water to drain away from the items it holds, to keep those items elevated away from the basin floor where food residue and standing water accumulate, and to free up counter space that would otherwise be occupied by a drying rack or a pile of damp tools.
In practical terms, a sink caddie is a system of metal or plastic rods, trays, baskets, or cups, joined by welds, or molded as a single piece, that rests on the edge of a sink, hangs over the divider between two basins, mounts to the wall above the sink, or sits on the counter adjacent to it. The most common domestic configuration is the over-the-sink caddie, which straddles the basin rim with two arms and holds a sponge, a brush, and possibly a small bottle of dish soap. The most common commercial configuration is the in-basin mat or basket that sits on the floor of a deep three-compartment sink, holding pots and pans above the drain, or a wall-mounted grid that keeps scrub brushes and cleaning tools off the deck.
