Sink mats and grids serve a primary, non-negotiable function: they act as a sacrificial layer between the sink basin and the objects that are placed into it. In a commercial kitchen, a heavy cast-iron skillet or a steel mixing bowl dropped from a height of just six inches can exert a force sufficient to chip porcelain enamel or dent a thin-gauge stainless steel basin. The grid absorbs the initial impact, distributing the kinetic energy across its frame and feet rather than concentrating it on a single point of the sink floor. In a residential setting, the most common culprit is abrasive grit. Microscopic sand and dirt particles carried on the bottom of a stock pot, a Dutch oven, or even a ceramic casserole dish act like sandpaper against the sink's finish. Over time, this friction leads to a dull, scratched appearance that cannot be polished out. The grid elevates the dishware off the basin floor, holding it above the zone where this micro-abrasion occurs.

Beyond impact and abrasion, the grid also protects against chemical and thermal stress.
