A sled is an engineered tool for moving a load over snow or ice, using gravity, muscle power, or a motorized vehicle as its source of traction. It is a simple machine, but not a trivial one. The distinction between a children's toy and a piece of professional equipment lies in the details: the material's behavior at low temperatures, the geometry of the runner or hull, the load distribution, and the friction characteristics of the interface with the snow. Understanding these details is the difference between a tool that fails at the worst possible moment and one that performs reliably for years.
To dispense with the most common misconception: a sled is not merely a container with a smooth bottom. The hull or the runners, whichever design is used, are a performance surface. They interact with snow that is complex and variable. Snow is not a uniform substance. At -5°C, it might be wet, dense, and granular. At -25°C, it becomes a fine, powdery, almost abrasive material. The coefficient of friction between a polymer sled bottom and snow can vary by a factor of five or more depending on temperature, snow crystal structure, and the pressure exerted by the sled's weight.
Friction itself is the core of how a sled works. The goal of a good sled is not to eliminate friction entirely, but to manage it. You want a high coefficient of static friction when loading the sled to keep it from sliding away on
