A snow globe is a sealed transparent vessel containing a liquid and a suspension of solid particles, mounted on a base that is not part of the sealed volume. That is the entire definition, and it is worth being precise about it because most of what people believe about snow globes - that the liquid is water, that the particles are snow, that the base is simply a stand - is either inaccurate or incomplete. The practical reality is that a snow globe is a small hydraulic system with a sealed pressure boundary, a fluid medium, and a sediment that must behave predictably across decades of temperature swings, handling, and light exposure. Understanding that system is what separates a professional who can evaluate a globe in thirty seconds from someone who buys a leaking piece of nostalgia and cannot figure out why it failed.
The liquid is rarely pure water. Most contemporary mass-produced globes use a mixture of distilled water and a small percentage of a rheology modifier - typically propylene glycol or glycerin - to increase viscosity and slow the fall of the particles. This is not an accident. Pure water is far too thin to create the slow, gentle fall that people associate with a quality snow globe; the particles would plummet to the base in under a second.
