Chapter 1: Understanding Solar Panels
A solar panel is a device that converts sunlight directly into electricity. This is not a vague statement about generating "green power" - it is a description of a specific physical process. To understand what a solar panel is, you must first understand that the vast majority of panels on the market are made of semiconductor materials, most commonly silicon. When sunlight strikes this material, it supplies energy to electrons, knocking them loose and creating a flow of electricity. This is the photovoltaic effect, and it is the fundamental principle that makes all modern solar panels work.
It is helpful to think of a solar panel less as a single object and more as an engineered assembly of smaller units called cells. A standard residential panel, often called a module, measures roughly 65 inches by 39 inches and contains sixty or seventy-two of these individual cells. These cells are wired together in series, which increases the voltage of the panel, and the entire assembly is sandwiched between a layer of tempered glass on the front and a protective polymer backsheet on the rear. This entire structure is then framed in anodized aluminum. The frame serves a practical purpose: it provides structural rigidity, gives you a solid surface for mounting, and helps protect the edges of the fragile cells from physical impact. Without that frame, a panel would be incredibly difficult to install and far more prone to damage.
