Chapter 1: Understanding Sound Meters
A sound meter is a precision instrument designed to measure sound pressure level, which is the physical pressure variation in air that our ears perceive as sound. It is not a microphone feeding a screen, and it is not an app on a phone. A real sound meter is a complete measurement system with a microphone, a preamplifier, a detector circuit, and a display, all engineered to be accurate, repeatable, and traceable to national standards. When you read a value like 72.4 dB from a sound meter, that number means something specific and comparable to other measurements taken with a properly calibrated instrument. Understanding what sits behind that number is critical if you intend to use it for anything beyond curiosity.
The quantity a sound meter reports is the sound pressure level, abbreviated SPL, expressed in decibels. Decibels are logarithmic units, which means they compress a huge range of pressure variations into a manageable scale. The threshold of hearing, around 20 micropascals, is assigned the reference value of 0 dB. A normal conversation at one meter is roughly 60 dB, a busy street is around 80 dB, and a rock concert can exceed 110 dB at the stage edge. Because the scale is logarithmic, an increase of 10 dB represents a tenfold increase in sound pressure, and it is generally perceived as roughly twice as loud by human ears.
