Chapter 1: Understanding Spinning Wheel Accessories

The spinning wheel in front of you is not a single tool. It is a system of interacting parts: a drive wheel, a tension mechanism, a flyer, and a bobbin. The spindle and the shaft move the fiber; the flyer twists it; the bobbin gathers it. In commercial spinning machines, these components are engineered as sealed units. In a spinning wheel, they are interchangeable, replaceable, and - for the serious user - always worth understanding on their own terms. Spinning wheel accessories are the components that attach to the main frame or work in concert with it to determine what yarn you can make, how fast you can make it, and how consistently you can reproduce a result.

To understand accessories, you must first understand the three-phase nature of drafting, twisting, and taking up. The flyer twists the drafted fiber into yarn. The bobbin gathers that yarn onto its core. Take-up tension is the force that pulls the newly twisted yarn onto the bobbin. On a single-drive wheel, one drive band spins both the flyer and the bobbin, with a brake or friction mechanism on the bobbin to create differential speed. On a double-drive wheel, one continuous band wraps around both the flyer whorl and the bobbin pulley, creating a fixed ratio that relies on the difference in diameter to produce take-up. On a bobbin-led wheel, the drive band turns the bobbin, and the flyer is dragged along, with its speed and tension controlled
