What a Staircase Actually Is
A staircase is a series of steps arranged to allow vertical movement between levels of a building, but the practical engineering reality is more specific. A stair is a framed incline made of load-bearing members, repetitive treads, side stringers or a central spine, and a set of guard and handrail elements. Each component has a job: the stringers transfer weight down to the landing or floor structure, the treads carry the live load of people, and the guard system prevents falls from the open side. When you look at a stair, you are looking at a structural system that has to absorb dynamic loads from human movement, resist lateral forces from leaning on rails, and, in many buildings, provide a fire-rated path of egress.
To understand why stairs fail, you need to see them as parts of the building's primary structure, not as furniture. A common misconception among homeowners and even some general contractors is that a stair is a carpentry feature, important for looks but not really load-bearing. That is wrong. A stair is a structural frame just as a floor joist or a roof truss is, and it has the same obligation to carry its load without excessive deflection or creep.
