Chapter 1: Understanding Surgical Tables
A surgical table is not a piece of furniture. It is a precision positioning system that must support a human being, hold them immobile over a wide range of geometric positions, and allow a surgical team to work on them safely. If the table fails to position correctly, drifts by a few degrees, or flexes under load, the consequences are not a bad review - they include nerve damage from malpositioning, imaging artifacts that obscure a diagnosis, and the physical risk of a patient falling during a procedure. Understanding what a surgical table actually is requires looking at it as a mechanical and electrical machine, not as a metal-framed bed. Every table, from the most basic manual model to the fully integrated robotic-capable system, shares the same core anatomy: a base, a column, a top (or tabletop), and a control system, each playing a specific role in the machine's function.
Start with the base. It is the foundation that sits on the operating room floor and carries the entire weight of the machine and the patient. On most tables, the base houses the wheels or casters, the floor locks, and often the power source - either a battery or the manual hydraulic pump mechanism. A typical base is roughly 300 mm (about 12 inches) tall and extends outward to create a footprint that provides stability. This footprint is critical; a table with a narrow base can tip over when tilted aggressively with a heavy patient.
