Chapter 1: Understanding Tiller & Cultivator Attachments
A tiller attachment is, at its core, a power-driven set of blades that chew through soil. It is not a plow and it is not a harrow. It is a machine that uses rotating tines to break up, mix, and aerate soil to a uniform depth in a single pass. When you mount one on a tractor's three-point hitch or a walk-behind power unit, you are essentially taking the action of a spade and a rake and multiplying it by hundreds of rotations per minute. The result is a seedbed that is loose, consistent, and free of large clods, without the multiple passes that traditional disc harrowing or plowing often require.
To understand what the attachment does, you have to understand the geometry of the tines. Tines are curved steel blades that extend from the periphery of a rotating flange or drum. As the drum spins, the tines strike the soil, slice the ground upward, and then cast the soil forward and upward before releasing it. The direction of rotation matters more than most first-time buyers realize. A forward-rotating tiller has the tines spinning in the same direction as the tractor's wheels, which means the implement is pulled toward the ground and forward. This is the most common configuration for small- and mid-size attachments.
