The toe spacer is a small, often inexpensive piece of material, but the geometry of the human foot dictates that this category carries more technical nuance than its appearance suggests. At its core, a toe spacer is any device that fits between two or more toes to separate them. That separation is its primary function, but the reasons for that separation, the materials used, and the fit parameters vary so widely that understanding the underlying mechanics is essential for anyone fitting them on clients, stocking them on shelves, or simply wearing them for their own foot health.
To understand the function, we must look at the mechanics of gait and load. The human foot is a flexible structure of twenty-six bones, thirty-three joints, and over a hundred muscles, tendons, and ligaments. During a normal walking or running stride, the foot pronates and supinates, acting as a shock absorber and a rigid lever. As you push off through your big toe, your body weight transfers along the line of the metatarsal heads. The toes themselves act as stabilizers and push-off assist devices. When your toes are compressed together, forced into narrow shoes, or have drifted out of alignment due to genetics, injury, or weakness, they cannot perform their stabilizing function effectively. The forefoot widens slightly during weight-bearing.
