What Toners and Astringents Actually Are

A toner, in modern practice, is a water-based liquid applied to the skin after cleansing and before moisturizing or treatment products. An astringent is a subset of toner formulated with a higher proportion of alcohol or other protein-denaturing ingredients, designed to tighten skin and reduce surface oil. The distinction is blurry in consumer marketing, but it matters in practice because the two product types serve different purposes and carry different risks.

Historically, toners were used to rebalance the skin's pH after harsh bar soap cleansing, which left an alkaline residue. Soap-based cleansers had a pH around 9 to 10, while healthy skin sits at a pH near 4.5 to 5.5. A toner with an acidic pH, often containing citric acid or witch hazel distillate, helped close the gap. This is less necessary today because most commercial cleansers are already pH-balanced, but the habit of using a toner has persisted. What has changed is the formulation. Modern toners range from simple hydrating solutions of glycerin and water to complex blends of exfoliating acids, plant extracts, and film-forming polymers.

The term "astringent" refers to a measurable biological effect: the contraction or tightening of skin cells and the constriction of pores due to protein precipitation. This effect is produced by alcohol, witch hazel tannins, or acids. When you apply a high-alcohol astringent to oily skin, the immediate sensation is a tight, cool feeling.
