A toothbrush sanitizer is a powered device that uses a physical or chemical process to reduce the microbial load on a toothbrush head between uses. That is its entire purpose. It does not clean the brush of food debris or toothpaste residue, it does not repair worn bristles, and it does not replace the recommendation of changing a brush every three months. At its core, it is a mini environmental control unit for a small, specific surface area. When you take away the marketing, the device is a box, a power source, and an active agent (usually ultraviolet light at a specific wavelength) that reacts with microbial DNA and prevents the organism from replicating.
The most common and effective type on the market is a UV-C sanitizer. UV-C is a band of ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength between 200 and 280 nanometers. The germicidal sweet spot is around 253.7 nanometers, which is the peak output of low-pressure mercury vapor lamps that have been used in hospital water and air purification for decades. When this radiation hits a bacterial cell, it creates thymine dimers in the DNA. In plain terms, the genetic material gets tangled and the cell becomes sterile.
