The Nature of the Material
Unspun fiber is any mass of discrete, discontinuous fibers that has not yet been twisted, matted, or otherwise permanently bound into a continuous structure. This includes the raw fleece off a sheep, a bale of scoured cotton, a bump of combed top, and a bag of carded batts. The defining characteristic is that the material is held together only by its own internal cohesion and friction, not by an external structure like a yarn twist or a woven weave. This may seem like a simple definition, but the distinction is critical. It determines everything about how you handle the material, what you can make with it, and how it will behave when you subject it to tension, moisture, or heat.
To understand unspun fiber, you have to let go of the idea that you are working with a "string" or a "thread." A spun yarn is a structure engineered for tensile strength. The twist locks fibers together so that when you pull on the yarn, the force is transmitted along the length and distributed across the friction between the overlapping fibers. Unspun fiber, by contrast, has very little tensile strength in its raw state. You can pull a piece of roving apart with your hands. This is not a defect; it is the point.
