Watering globes and spikes are deceptively simple devices. A glass or plastic bulb filled with water, inverted into a tapered spike or neck that is pushed into the soil, is the entire mechanism. Yet, despite their simplicity, they are an effective and reliable method for delivering a slow, steady supply of water to potted plants and in-ground containers. To use them effectively, you must understand what they are not: they are not self-filling reservoirs, nor are they a replacement for a hydroponic drip system, nor are they a solution for plants that require consistently moist soil in every condition. They are, at their core, passive, single-admission irrigation tools that operate on the physical principle of negative pressure generated by a differential in soil moisture.
Consider the most common scenario: a vacation. A consumer fills a globe with water, plunges the spike into a pot of a peace lily, and departs for two weeks. With the correct globe size and a healthy plant, the soil is kept at a somewhat consistent moisture level for the duration. The globe empties over days, not minutes. Contrast this with simply pouring a large volume of water into the pot before leaving; the water would immediately drain to the bottom, pool, and potentially cause root rot, or it would evaporate quickly from the surface. The watering globe provides a slow-release mechanism. This is the core value proposition: it extends the time a plant can be left unattended without
