Chapter 1: Understanding Wedding Dresses

Consider a wedding dress as a piece of engineered textile machinery. It has a support structure (the bodice), a load-bearing outer layer (the skirt), a system of closures (the zipper, buttons, or corset lacing), and a set of interfaces with the human body (the seams, the boning, the straps). Each of these elements can be built to a wildly different standard of quality. Two dresses that look identical on a hanger ten feet away can differ in material cost by a factor of ten and in labor time by a factor of forty. That difference is not a mystery. It is a set of decisions made in a factory or a workroom. This chapter is about those decisions.

The first thing to understand is that a wedding dress is almost never a single piece of cloth. It is a composite assembly of multiple layers. The outer fabric is what you see and what the marketing photograph shows. Underneath it sits a lining, which is usually a lightweight plain-weave fabric in a color matched to the outer layer. Between the outer fabric and the lining, on the bodice, there is an interlining or an interfacing. This middle layer is what gives the bodice its shape and stiffness. It can be a fusible web glued onto the outer fabric with heat and pressure, or it can be a separate layer of fabric that is sewn in. The difference is foundational.
