Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You are not looking for advice. You are looking for a way out. You have a project that is stalled because two senior people refuse to speak to each other, or an employee who delivers brilliant work but makes everyone else miserable, or a peer in another department who has declared bureaucratic war on your team's timeline. You have already tried the "let's all sit down and talk it out" approach, and sometimes it worked. More often, you left the room promising to "circle back on action items" while a quiet part of you accepted that nothing had actually changed.

The common wisdom says you need better communication skills. It says you need more empathy, more patience, and a deeper understanding of the other person's perspective. Articles and trainings insist that if you just listen harder, ask better questions, and find that elusive "win-win" outcome, the conflict will resolve itself and everyone will be happier and more productive. This advice is not wrong for everyone. For a mediator called in to resolve a dispute between two estranged neighbors, that advice works very well.
