Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works
You have tried the morning routine. You have downloaded the habit tracker. You have written out your goals with a Sharpie and put them on the bathroom mirror. You have listened to the podcasts about discipline, and you have repeated the mantras about becoming the person you want to be. And yet, despite all that, you are here. Not because you lack willpower, but because almost everything you have been taught about consistency is built on a lie.
The lie is that consistency is a matter of mind over matter. The common wisdom says that if you just want it enough, if you just try hard enough, you will do the thing. We are sold a narrative that a productive person is a specific type of person, one who possesses an ironclad will and an indomitable spirit. When we fail to be that person, we conclude that we are weak. We internalize the failure as a character flaw. We tell ourselves that we need to be tougher, more focused, more driven. So we buy another planner, we read another book, and we try another productivity app, hoping that this time, the magic of a new tool will finally unlock the discipline we believe we lack.
This is what I call the Willpower Delusion. It is the assumption that behavior is primarily driven by conscious, deliberate choice. And it is demonstrably, scientifically wrong.
