Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have tried. You have read the books, taken the courses, and downloaded the apps. You have blocked out an hour each morning, only to find that when you try to recall what you learned just three days ago, it is gone. You are left with a vague sense that you have "covered" the material, but if you had to explain it to someone else, you would stumble. You are not stupid, lazy, or undisciplined. The common wisdom about learning is wrong. We are told that if we highlight key passages, re-read our notes, and review them repeatedly, the material will stick. This is often followed by a reference to a particular "learning style" - you are a visual learner, an auditory learner, a kinesthetic learner - that assumes you simply need to find the right input channel, and then the information will flow in. The truth is that the evidence for learning styles is so weak that it should be considered a myth. More importantly, the methods that feel most familiar, most comfortable, and most productive - re-reading, highlighting, and summarizing - are almost entirely passive.
