Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You are smart, capable, and motivated. You have not been ignoring cybersecurity. You have probably read articles about phishing, watched a news segment about ransomware, and maybe even set up a password manager. Yet, If you are anything like the people I speak with, you still feel a low-grade hum of anxiety. That voice in your head says, "I know I should do more, but what, and in what order?"

That anxiety is not a sign of ignorance. It is a symptom of the real problem: most of the information out there is not designed to help you. It is designed to scare you, sell you something, or make the writer seem smart. The result is a pile of contradictory, decontextualized advice that does not form a system. You do not fail because you are lazy. You fail because the conventional wisdom is a trap.

The Three Pillars of Bad Advice

The "common wisdom" of cybersecurity for the average person rests on three pillars, and all three are rotten. The first pillar is fear. The default mode of most tech media is to highlight the newest, most exotic attack. The logic goes that if you are scared enough, you will pay attention. But fear without structure creates paralysis. You end up worrying about "zero-day exploits" and "state-sponsored actors" while your email account is vulnerable to a simple, easily-cracked password.

The second pillar is what I call "kitchen sink" advice.
