Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works
Think back to the last time you tried to improve your data skills. Maybe you signed up for a course on a popular learning platform, or you bought a book with a video of someone smiling at a laptop on the cover. You worked through the modules. You learned how to create a chart in Excel or how to read a scatter plot. You felt a quiet sense of progress. Then, a week later, something real appeared on your desk. A memo with a graph claiming your department was failing, or a survey result that contradicted what you knew from on-the-ground experience. Your new skills did not help you decide what to do. They did not even help you figure out whether the claim was true. You could read the axis labels, but you could not read the intent behind them.
This is the failure loop that my research and work with over two hundred professionals has identified. It is not a loop of ignorance. It is a loop of disconnected information. The vast majority of people who want to be more data-literate are not starting from zero. They have watched the tutorials. They have memorized the term for the bias that makes them overconfident. They have even successfully used a VLOOKUP once. And they are still stuck in the same place they were when they started: feeling like a fraud when confronted with a real-world data problem.
