Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works
You are not bad at learning. You have been following bad instructions.
Think about the last time you tried to learn something difficult. A language, a new software tool, a complex professional certification. You probably started the same way most people do. You wanted to understand the material, so you began to read the textbook or watch the video course. You highlighted key passages. You took tidy notes. You re-read the important chapters to make sure you "got it." And when you reached the end of your study session, you felt a genuine sense of accomplishment. You felt that you had learned something.
That feeling is a lie, and it is the single most common reason why your learning fails.
The feeling that you have mastered something is not the same as having mastered it. In cognitive psychology, this is called the "illusion of competence." The more smoothly information flows into your head, the more confident you are that it is stored there. But the evidence is damning. A classic study by Jeffrey Karpicke and Henry Roediger showed that students who repeatedly studied a list of word pairs were highly confident they would remember them later. They did not. A second group of students in the same study spent their time trying to recall the word pairs from memory instead of just re-reading them. They felt less confident during the learning session, but when the test came, they remembered
