Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

Let's start with a hard truth: the reason you are struggling to sell your knowledge online is not because you don't know enough about your subject. It's not because you are bad at marketing. And it is not because the market is too saturated. The real reason is that you have been following a playbook that was written backwards.

This is the most common failure pattern I see. It goes like this: you identify an expertise you have, maybe years of experience as a project manager, a nutritionist, a guitar teacher. You decide to create a course. You spend three months, maybe six, building out 40 videos, a beautiful workbook, and a professionally designed landing page. You launch it to your friends, your email list, your social followers. And then: silence. A few sales here and there, but nothing that justifies the hundreds of hours you put in. You start to believe you don't have what it takes, or that the market simply doesn't want what you have to offer.

Neither of those things is true. The problem is that you started with a solution and tried to work backwards to find a problem. That is the fundamental error, and it is so common because it is the conventional wisdom. The standard advice for the last decade has been to "create authority content," "build a personal brand," and "launch a comprehensive course." The most well-meaning advice has it backwards.
