You are not doing it wrong. That is the first thing you need to hear. Common wisdom says that if you just collect enough "tools" for your mental health toolbox, you will be prepared for anything. It implies that a crisis is like a leaky pipe, and you just need the right wrench to fix it. This is wrong. It is the most pervasive and damaging myth in the mental health space. The result is a generation of people who are experts in the tools, yet utterly exhausted by the process of trying to use them. They have a toolbox overflowing with gadgets, but no blueprint for how to build a stable house.
The problem is not a lack of coping mechanisms. The problem is a lack of a system. Coping mechanisms are reactive tools. They are what you do when you are already drowning. You
