The Perpetual Beginner's Trap

Look around any commercial gym in January and you will see the same faces twice a week. They are doing curls in the squat rack. They are trying to "tone up" with high-rep, light-weight circuits. They are leaving after 30 minutes, exhausted but not stimulated. By March, most of them are gone. They haven't failed because they are lazy. They have failed because they were given a system that fundamentally does not work for building muscle.

The common wisdom is that you need to suffer. The "burn" is good. You need to scream at yourself in the mirror and take pre-workout powder to survive the workout. You need to spend two hours in the gym, seven days a week, if you want to look like you lift. This is the "grind" mentality, and it is a lie that leads directly to burnout and injury.

The other popular advice is the "just move more" mantra. Walk 10,000 steps, take the stairs, eat less, move more, and you will get in shape. This is true if your goal is weight loss. It is completely useless if your goal is to build muscle. Muscle is not built by moving more. Muscle is built by signaling a specific biological process in your body that says, "This tissue is not strong enough for the load, please make it bigger."
