Chapter 1: First Day
Welcome to day one. You have probably watched ballet on a screen or maybe seen it live once, and your main thought was: that looks beautiful and also impossible. So let's just say it plainly before we start: ballet is hard work. It is physically demanding in ways you don't expect when you watch a dancer glide across a stage. But it is also learnable, bit by bit, in small, repetitive pieces. Today is about letting your body get a feel for what this art form is actually asking of you. No pressure to be graceful. No expectation that you'll look anything like the videos. Just a first, honest, physical meeting between you and ballet.
Before you do anything else, find your practice space. You need about an arm's length of clear floor in every direction from where you'll stand. A living room with the coffee table pushed aside works. A hallway with enough width to stretch your arms out works. A bedroom with a clear patch of floor works. You do not need a studio, a mirror, or a barre. You need a wall, a sturdy chair, or a kitchen counter that can support your weight when you hold onto it. That will be your barre for these ten days.
