Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome to your first day. Before you even think about buying supplies or watching a tutorial, let’s be clear about what this day is actually for: you’re going to get your hands on some materials, understand what basket weaving really feels like, and end today with one small, satisfying result. That’s it. No masterpiece, no perfect technique, just a genuine first contact.

First, find a clear table or countertop. You don’t need a dedicated craft area—a kitchen table with a decent light source works perfectly. Today you’re not going to be weaving a basket yet. Instead, you’ll be familiarizing yourself with the two most common materials in this craft: reed and raffia. If you haven’t bought anything yet, that’s fine. For this first session, you can get away with items you might already have at home, or a cheap package from any craft store.

Let’s talk about what you’ll need to start. The easiest and most traditional way to learn is with round reed—thin, flexible strips of rattan that look like thick, stiff spaghetti. You can buy a half-pound bundle for around eight to ten dollars at most craft stores, and that single bundle will be more than enough for your entire 10 days. If you can’t find reed, you can also use dried raffia, which has a looser, more thread-like texture and is even cheaper.
