Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome. If you're reading this, you've probably looked at a piece of batik fabric at some point - maybe a shirt, a wall hanging, a tablecloth - and thought, "How do they do that?" That's exactly where I was when I started. So let me be clear about what this book is and what it is not. It's not a masterclass. It's not going to teach you to be a Javanese master craftsman in ten days. That would be a lie. What this book will do is walk you through a real, concrete ten-day plan to get you from "I'm curious but have no idea where to start" to "I made a small piece of batik, and I'm deciding if I want to keep going." That's it. And that's honest.

For the next ten days, we're going to do this together. Every day has one task. Some days are more about setup or planning, others are about actually doing the craft. Today, Day One, is about orientation - but not in the boring "let's learn the history" sense. I mean orientation with your own hands.
