The Purple Guide to Learning Beatboxing in 10 Days

A 10-Day Starter Plan to Make Your First Real Beatbox Sounds and Decide If It's for You

by Alumigogo Books

Chapter 1: First Day

Alright, so you've decided to try beatboxing. That's genuinely great. It's one of the few skills where you really do have all the equipment you need sitting right in your face. But let's set one thing straight before we start: you are not going to sound like a professional beatboxer today. You might not even sound like a beatboxer at all. You might sound like a person trying to clear their throat while whispering, or like a dying car engine, or like a pigeon that swallowed something it shouldn't have. That is completely fine, and it means you're doing it right.

Today is not about making music. Today is about getting a feel for what it's like to make controlled sounds with your mouth that aren't words. It's a total orientation day. I want you to get a sense of what the practice actually involves, what it sounds and feels like, and why it's not just 'talking nonsense' but a physical skill that you can build on.

Before we even make a sound, find a place to do this. A private spot is ideal, because you will feel ridiculous. That's a fact, not a prophecy. You don't need silence, but you do need to be comfortable making weird noises without trying to explain yourself to a roommate, a parent, or a confused dog. Your car, a bathroom, a bedroom with the door locked, a quiet park bench (if you're brave) — anywhere you won't be interrupted
