Chapter 1: First Day
Before you do anything, get a deck of cards. Not a fancy one, not a limited-edition one, not one you've kept in a drawer for years because it feels special. Just a regular deck of playing cards. A brand-new one that's smooth and doesn't stick together is ideal, but the deck in your kitchen drawer works fine for today. The goal of this first session is not to perform. The goal is to feel the cards in your hands and learn why they're not as intimidating as they look.
Take a few minutes to just sit with the deck. Feel the weight of it. Run your thumb across the edge of the cards and notice how smooth they are. A deck of cards has a thickness and a heft that feels different than you might expect. This is your tool, and familiarizing yourself with its basic physical reality is the very first step. A surgeon knows the weight of a scalpel. A carpenter knows the grain of a piece of wood. You're now the kind of person who knows what a fresh deck of Bicycle cards feels like.
Now, split the deck in half. It might feel clumsy. That's fine. Split it again, and put the halves back together. Do this a few times until it feels less like a foreign object and more like something you can handle. This is called "handling," and it's a real term in card magic. It just means any time
