Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome. You're here because you're curious about creative writing, and that's the only qualification you need to start this guide. You don't need to have written anything before. You don't need to know how to structure a story. You don't even need to be good at English, whatever that means. All you need is a willingness to sit down with a blank page for about forty minutes today, and to follow one small, specific instruction.

Let's be clear about what creative writing actually is, because the phrase covers a lot of ground. It's writing short stories, poems, novel chapters, scenes, character sketches, and stream-of-consciousness fragments. It's different from writing an email or a work report because the goal isn't to convey information as clearly as possible — it's to create a feeling, a picture, a moment. On this first day, you're not going to write a masterpiece. You're going to write something honest, and that alone will feel surprisingly hard and surprisingly good.

Here's what your first session will actually look like. Find a quiet place where you won't be interrupted for the next forty minutes. Turn your phone to silent, not vibrate — silent, because vibrate still triggers a part of your brain that wants to check what happened.
