Today is not the day you will create a masterpiece. Today is not the day you will even finish a small patch of fabric. Today is the day you will sit down, pick up a needle and some thread, and physically learn what this hobby feels like. That's it. And that's enough.
Cross-stitch is a simple craft at its core: you make X-shaped stitches on a grid of fabric to create a picture. The fabric, called aida, is woven with a visible grid of tiny holes. You push your needle up through one hole, down through another at a diagonal, and you've made the first half of an X. Do it again in the opposite direction, and you have a full cross stitch. Repeat that hundreds or thousands of times, following a pattern, and you get a picture. That's the whole secret. There are variations, but for today, that's all you need to know.
