Chapter 1: First Day
Welcome to day one. You've picked up this guide because you're curious about dominoes, but you might be wondering what you've gotten yourself into. Let me be straight with you: today you are not going to learn strategy, you are not going to learn trick plays, and you are not going to win any tournaments. What you are going to do is get your hands on the tiles, learn how they feel, and play your very first legal, structured game of dominoes - even if it's just against yourself. That's the whole win for today, and it's a bigger deal than it sounds.
First, let's get the basics out of the way. A standard domino set has 28 rectangular tiles, sometimes called bones, stones, or tiles. Each tile is divided into two halves, and each half has a number of dots, called pips, from zero to six. Zero is a blank half. So you have a tile with a six and a three, a tile with a four and a blank, and so on. Every possible pair of numbers from zero to six appears exactly once. That's the entire inventory. You don't need to memorize this right now - you just need to know what you're looking at.
Your first task today, before you even think about rules, is to find a flat surface, dump the tiles out of the box, and just look at them. Turn them over in your hands, feel their weight, run
