Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome to day one. You're here because you've thought about trying improv comedy, and you've finally decided to give it an actual shot. Let's be clear about what today is: today is not about being funny. Today is not about learning rules or memorizing techniques. Today is about one thing only — getting your feet wet in the shallow end of the pool, feeling what improv actually feels like, and ending with a small, genuine win that you can point to and say, "I did that."

Before you do anything else, let's set up your space. You don't need a stage, a microphone, or any special equipment. You need a room where you can stand, move your arms freely, and speak out loud without feeling self-conscious about a neighbor or roommate hearing you. If you live alone, that's easy. If you don't, you need to make a deal with yourself for the next twenty-ish minutes: you will not worry about who's listening. Close the door. Maybe put on some comfortable shoes — you won't be running, but you will be standing for a while. Have a bottle of water nearby, because you'll be using your voice more than you expect.
