Chapter 1: First Day
Welcome to day one. Let's be completely clear about what you're about to do: you're going to spend about fifteen minutes throwing a small object from one hand to the other, and you're going to do it in a way that feels a little bit awkward. That's it. That's the whole goal for today. There is no magic, no secret technique, and no expectation that you'll be juggling three balls by tonight. If you can walk away from today's session having thrown a ball accurately a few times in a row, you've succeeded.
Before You Start: Gather Your Two Tools
For today's session, you only need two things. The first is a single juggling ball, or something that approximates one. If you have a beanbag, perfect. If you don't, a small orange from the fruit bowl works fine. A tennis ball is acceptable, though it will bounce about a bit. A balled-up pair of socks is also fine, though it feels a bit flimsy. The ideal object has a little weight to it, doesn't roll away the second it hits the floor, and fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. The second thing you need is a bit of open space. You don't need a stadium, just an area about two arm lengths wide and tall. Make sure it's clear of family heirlooms, glasses of water, or anything else a dropped ball could break or knock over.
Stand up. Yes, right now, if you can.
