Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome. This is the very beginning, and it's okay to feel completely lost — actually, it's more than okay, it's expected. If you're holding this book (or reading it on a screen) because you've been curious about knitting but haven't dared to try, today is the day we take the pressure off entirely. Forget everything you've seen in movies, forget the perfect socks and intricate sweaters, forget YouTube videos that speed through steps like you already know them. Today's goal is not to make anything. Today's goal is to get you comfortable with the idea that your hands can hold these tools and that the yarn does whatever you tell it to — even if that 'whatever' looks like a tangled mess.

Let me tell you what you'll need for this first session. You don't need to buy anything new or fancy. You need two straight knitting needles in a medium size — if you have a needle size confusion, imagine a medium pencil: not too skinny, not too thick. Size 8 or 9 (about 5 millimeters thick) is perfect. Most big-box craft stores sell single pairs for a couple of dollars. And you need a ball of yarn. Not fancy yarn — the kind of yarn that feels soft but is smooth, not fuzzy. Weight classification doesn't matter; just tell a store employee you want a 'worsted weight' or a 'medium weight' yarn and they'll point you in the right direction. Pick a color you
