Chapter 1: First Day
Welcome. I'm going to be honest with you from the start: puppetry is not something you master in ten days. It's a craft that takes years of practice, and even professionals still have days where a puppet feels like a dead sock on their hand. But that's not what this is about. This is about giving you a real, hands-on taste of the art — enough to know, by day ten, whether you want to keep going. And if you show up today, even a little uncertain, you're already past the hardest hurdle.
So let's talk about what day one actually looks like. Not the day in a week, not the day in a month — today. Your first session should take about forty-five minutes to an hour. You'll need a few things, most of which you already have in your house. You'll need an old sock — the floppier the better. A worn-out crew sock works better than a fancy dress sock, because you want something with a little give. You'll need a marker or some fabric glue. You'll need a pair of scissors. And you'll need two small buttons, or two small pom-poms, or even just dots drawn on with a marker — anything that can serve as eyes. If you have felt or yarn, great, but don't let a craft store run stop you. A marker literally works for a first session.
That's it. That's the entire equipment list. You're not buying anything.
