The Purple Guide to Learning Stand-Up Comedy in 10 Days

A 10-Day Starter Plan to Write Your First 5 Minutes, Try It on Stage, and Decide If Comedy Is Worth Pursuing

by Alumigogo Books

Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome. You have just made a slightly strange, slightly brave decision. You want to try stand-up comedy. You are not here because you think you are the next big headliner. You are here because you are curious, because you suspect it might be fun, or terrifying, or both. Or maybe because you have a silly thought about your boss or your dog that will not leave you alone. That is enough. That is a great place to start.

Before you write anything, let us set one ground rule, one that will save you a lot of pain. You are not going to "be funny" today. You are going to do a tiny, clumsy, first step. That is the whole goal. A first day at anything looks like you, staring at a notebook, wondering if you made a mistake. So let us look at the room you are sitting in right now. That is your comedy club. The cushion on the couch is your mic stand. The blank page is your audience. And they are already on your side, because they don't care yet.

Your only real task for this first session is to get one thought out of your head and onto paper, and then say it out loud. Not a joke. A thought. Stand-up comedy starts as a 90% thought and becomes a 10% punchline. So let us start with the thought.
