Chapter 1: First Day
Welcome to day one. You're here because you're curious about the harmonica, and that's enough of a reason to start. Before you even pick up the instrument, let's set expectations: by the end of today's session — aim for 20 to 30 minutes — you will not be playing a song. You won't be able to produce a clean single note yet. What you will do is learn what this instrument feels like in your hands and mouth, make your first real sounds, and get one tiny, measurable win that makes tomorrow feel worthwhile.
Find a quiet spot where you won't be interrupted. A kitchen table works, or a porch, or a corner of the living room. You'll need your harmonica — if you haven't bought one yet, any standard diatonic harmonica in the key of C will do, and you can read more about gear later. For now, if you have a harmonica at all, you have everything you need. Sit comfortably with your back straight and elbows relaxed. Hold the harmonica with one hand — the left or right, doesn't matter — gripping the sides between your thumb and forefinger. The other hand can rest on your thigh or wrap around the back to help support it. This is not a precision grip; it's more like holding a sandwich you're about to bite into.
