Chapter 1: First Day

Welcome. You've decided to spend the next ten days finding out what it's actually like to play the piano. That's a very practical, very smart way to approach something new. This isn't about becoming a concert pianist by next week. It's about sitting down, touching the keys, and discovering if this instrument speaks to you. By the end of today's session, you will have produced a real, recognizable musical sound, and you will have a slightly better idea of what the path ahead looks like.

Before anything else, let's orient you. If you have a piano or a keyboard in front of you, great. If you're reading this before getting one, don't panic. Today can still be done with just a picture of a keyboard on your phone or a piece of paper with keys drawn on it, but it's far better if you have something with actual keys to press. A digital keyboard with at least 61 keys is fine. A full 88-key digital piano is the gold standard, but it is not a requirement for day one. A small, unweighted 61-key keyboard will feel a little like a toy compared to a real piano, but it is a perfectly fine place to start today.
