Chapter 1: First Day
Welcome. You are here because you want to know what it actually feels like to play a saxophone, and you are smart enough to want a plan instead of just buying one on a whim and hoping for the best. Today is your first day, and by the time you finish this session - in about thirty to forty minutes - you will have held a saxophone, made a sound with it (yes, a real one), and you will have a clear idea of the very first things you need to practice. You are not trying to sound like anything yet. Today is about getting comfortable with a big, shiny, complicated-looking object and proving to yourself that it is not as scary as it looks.
First, let's talk about what you need in front of you. If you have access to a saxophone, great - you need that, obviously. If you are renting or borrowing one, make sure it is an alto saxophone. That is the standard starting instrument: it is the middle-sized one, the most common, and the easiest to physically handle for most adults and teens. If you are at home and you don't have one but you were planning to buy or rent, that is fine - you can read through this chapter, understand what you are about to do, and then go get one.
