Chapter 1: First Day
Let's get one thing straight before we start: you are not going to become a weaver today. Today, you are going to make a few rows of actual woven fabric with your own hands, and that is a completely different thing. It is enough. If you've ever watched a video of a loom clacking away and felt a pull, or seen a textured wall hanging in a coffee shop and thought, "I want to make that," today is the day you find out if that itch is worth scratching.
We're not starting with a big wooden loom, a garage full of yarn, or a $200 starter kit. We're starting with trash and a fork. Literally. Here's why: the core of weaving is not the fancy equipment or the endless types of looms you can buy. The core is an idea. You have a set of parallel vertical threads (the warp). You pass a horizontal thread (the weft) over and under them, over and under, repeatedly. That's it. That is the entire universe of weaving. Every textile, from a silk scarf to a wool blanket to a denim jacket, is built on that simple over-and-under relationship. The looms, the pedals, the heddles—they all exist to make that single movement faster or more complex. So today, we are going to feel that movement with our own hands before we even think about a real loom.
