Chapter 1: First Day

First Day

Welcome. You've decided to try learning world geography, and that's a genuinely good start. But let's be clear about what you're getting into: this is not a "memorize 195 capitals by Friday" challenge. It's a ten-day experiment where you'll learn about the world the way you'd learn a friend's neighborhood — by walking around, making mistakes, and finding landmarks. And today, you won't even leave your desk.

Your first session will take about 45 minutes. That's it. One real evening, or a lazy Sunday morning, and you'll walk away with something tangible: a map you've drawn, a few countries you can place without looking, and a much clearer idea of what you don't know yet. That last part isn't a failure — it's information. Before we start, put your phone on silent and promise yourself you won't peek at any map while you're doing this. You'll break that promise maybe twice. That's normal.

What do you actually need? Two things: a printer with a single sheet of paper, and a pen or pencil. Go get them now. If you don't have a printer, grab a piece of notebook paper and a ruler — you'll draw a rough map by hand, and the guide will tell you how. For today, the key is that you have a blank surface you can write on, and nothing else. No apps, no atlases, no YouTube on the other tab. Just you and the empty paper.
